Drowsy Driving the Same as Drunk Driving?

Not getting enough sleep? Well maybe it’s about time you should because a recent study from AAA says that getting less than seven hours of sleep a day is just as risky as drunk driving! Read the article below by Sleep Savvy Magazine all about AAA’s study.

Drowsy Driving as Risky as Drunk Driving

A study from AAA finds sleeping less than seven hours a day doubles the dangers of crashing.

Drivers who miss between one to two hours of the recommended seven hours of sleep in a 24-hour period and are drowsing driving nearly double their risk of a crash, according to research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 35% of U.S. drivers sleep less than the recommended seven hours daily. And with drowsy driving involved in more than one in five fatal crashes on U.S. roadways each year, AAA warns drivers getting less than seven hours of sleep may have deadly consequences.

“You cannot miss sleep and still expect to be able to safely function behind the wheel,” says David Yang, executive director for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “Our new research shows that a driver who has slept for less than five hours has a crash risk comparable with someone driving drunk.”

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s report, “Acute Sleep Deprivation and Risk of Motor Vehicle Crash Involvement,” released in December 2016, reveals that drivers missing two to three hours of sleep in a 24-hour period more than quadrupled their risk of a crash, compared with drivers getting the recommended seven hours of sleep. This is the same crash risk the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration associates with driving over the legal limit for alcohol.

Aireloom Mattresses: Handcrafted Luxury

Aireloom: The Hand Made Mattress

There’s a lot to be said about something that is made by hand. Much like an elegant diamond necklace or exotic sports car, luxury items have exponentially more care and passion put into them, and Aireloom mattresses are no different.

Sure, there are a lot of nice mattresses available that are mass-produced in some giant factory somewhere on the other side of the world, but that’s not what Aireloom is all about.

When Aireloom says its mattresses are hand made, thats exactly how they are constructed; with the hands of hard-working men and women right here in America. As soon as you surrender your aches and pains to the mercy of an Aireloom, your body – and mind – will thank you endlessly.

What makes an Aireloom so special?

Besides the previously stated fact that these mattresses are meticulously designed, constructed, cut, sewn, reinforced, tested and re-tested by hand, there is a number of reasons why the Aireloom is the premier luxury mattress available.

  • Awarded four US Patents for mattress design including a chiropractic lumbar body mattress and edge support concepts
  • Strive to use all-natural materials, including certified-organic cotton, natural bamboo fabrics, natural Talalay latex and sustainable forest lumber
  • “8 way hand-tied foundations, English outer tufting, hand-stitched side walls and matching self welting – applied by skilled artisans truly separates this fine quality product from others.” -Aireloom Website
That last bullet says it all. Aireloom sets itself apart from all other mattress brands

Furniture/Today names 3 Retail Giants of Bedding
David Perry — Furniture Today, April 15, 2016

HIGH POINT – Gardner-White, Best Mattress and US-Mattress have been named Retail Giants of Bedding for 2016 by Furniture/Today.

Bedding Giants logo 2016Those mattress retailers will be honored at a gala awards dinner during Furniture/Today’s upcoming Bedding Conference, set for May 10-12 at the Westin LaPaloma Resort & Spa in Tucson, Ariz.

The awards dinner is on the evening of May 11.

Furniture/Today will also make a special presentation during that dinner to Gary Fazio, the recently retired CEO of SertaSimmons Bedding. The newspaper is presenting Fazio with its first Lifetime Bedding Achievement Award.

Auburn Hills, Mich.-based Gardner-White enjoys success with its team of comfort-focused mattress experts, who regularly talk about the importance of better sleep. That retailer, headed by Steve Tronstein, CEO, operates nine stores in the metro Detroit market.

Las Vegas-based Best Mattress, operated by home furnishings veteran David Mizrahi, general manager Joe Graziano and operations manager Christi Cassidy, has found a winning edge in the highly competitive Las Vegas market with broad selection, a veteran sales force, and a commitment to service. It operates almost two dozen stores in the Las Vegas, Mesquite and St. George markets.

Brighton, Mich.-based US-Mattress was a pioneer in online sales of mattresses, a category now enjoying a retail renaissance.

Founded in 2001 by Joe Nashif and Richard Winkler, US-Mattress bills itself as “America’s No. 1 online mattress retailer,” but the retailer also operates six mattress stores in Michigan and one home furnishings store in North Carolina.

“These three retailers represent three different retail models enjoying success in the mattress industry these days, an indication of the strength and vitality of the mattress category,” said Andrew Gross, executive vice president of marketing for Serta, which is sponsoring the awards dinner at the Bedding Conference.

The retailers will be honored with tribute videos and will be presented with a Retail Giant of Bedding award.

“Serta grows its business by helping its retailers grow their business,” Gross said. “We salute these retailers for their accomplishments, and we look forward to supporting all of our retail partners on their paths to success in 2016 and beyond.”

Adjustable Bed Buying Guide: Split vs. Divided King

Let's say this is a King Size mattress.Selecting the right bed can feel like a Herculean task at times with all the different choices that exist. Adjustable beds are a great option for people who are looking for relief from various health issues or just for an extra level of comfort. Adjustable beds have remotes that allow you to raise and lower your head and feet to suit your needs. King size adjustable beds have the most flexibility in adjustment options, and if you are thinking of getting a king size adjustable bed then you now have the choice (with certain manufacturers) between Split or Divided.

This is how a Split King is set up.What is a Split King?
King-sized beds are, at the risk of stating the obvious, are quite large. Mattresss are flexible. Foundations, however, are not. To get the base foundation inside your home, whether it is standard or adjustable, it comes in two parts that sit side-by-side under the mattress. A Split King adjustable bed therefore allows each side of the bed to move independently, so it is ideal for people who have different sleep needs. The foundations can also be synced together if you don’t need or want the sides to be adjusted separately.

This is how a Divided King is set up.What is a Divided King?
Until recently it didn’t matter if you wanted independent adjustment or for both sides of your bed to move up and down together, you needed to order a Split King. For people who prefer both sides of the bed to adjust in tandem there is now the option to buy a Divided King. A Divided King has a foundation that is still made up of two parts, but in this case it goes under the head and foot of the bed. This set-up is more efficient than a synced-up Split King, it removes the redundancy of having two separate motor systems to move your bed, that means a lower cost for you.

If you prefer independent adjustment from your partner then a Split King is what you are looking for. If separate movement isn’t necessary then you can save money with a Divided King. Have further questions or want to start shopping for your adjustable bed now? The bedding experts here at Gardner-White can help you figure out exactly what mattress and base system works best for your budget and needs.

Currently, we carry two different adjustable bed models with the Divided King option: the Serta® Motion Perfect® III and the Serta® Motion Custom™ II.

What does your sleep position say about you?

According to The Better Sleep Council, the way a person sleeps can indicate their personality traits. From the Free Fall to the Starfish, learn more about each position and gain new insight.

FREE FALL POSITION – People who lie on their bellies with arms under or wrapped around a pillow with head turned to the side make up 7% of the population studied. Free fallers are brash, outgoing, and are very uncomfortable with criticism.

STARFISH POSITION –  5% of sleepers lie on their backs with arms up near their head or the pillow. These people are good listeners, helpful, and are uncomfortable being the center of attention. Starfish sleepers are more likely to snore and suffer from a poor night’s sleep more often.

LOG POSITION – The study showed 15% of people sleep like a log. Log sleepers rest on their side with both arms down. They are usually social, easygoing people who are trusting, sometimes to the point of being gullible.

SOLDIER POSITION – 8% of people lie on their backs with arms down and close to the body. These soldier sleepers are said to be reserved, quiet, unfussy, and hold themselves and others to a high standard. They typically have a higher likelihood for snoring due to the flat-back position, which may not cause them to wake up often but may result in a less restful night’s sleep.

FETUS POSITION – This is the most common position, according to a Better Sleep Council study.  41% of participants sleep in this curled-up manner. Women are twice as likely to rest like this. These fetus-sleepers are said to have a tough exterior but are still sensitive and may appear to be shy but warm up quickly.

YEARNER POSITION – This is a side-lying position with both arms out in front of the body; 13% of participants sleep like this. Yearners are noted to be open-minded but still cynical, suspicious, and stubborn about sticking to decisions once they are made.

We spend nearly 3,000 hours per year sleeping! Make sure you’re spending that time on the perfect mattress. Shop Gardner-White’s mattress selection ( today and start getting your Best Sleep.

Sleep like a baby? How to make the most of limited rest as a new parent.

Family 6

“People who say they sleep like a baby usually don’t have one.” -Leo J. Burke

It was December 23, 2002. On this cold winters night, I crawled into bed and slept a solid, blissful, uninterrupted 8 hours. Why do I remember the exact date? Because it would be the very last time I slept 8 hours straight. The next night, Christmas Eve, my beautiful daughter Ava was born. And I haven’t slept the same since!

I’m now the mother of five kids, ages 12, 11, 6, 3 and not quite 2. You would think by #5 I would be a professional baby whisper. The mere touch of my hand would make a child fall instantly into deep slumber for at least 8 magical hours. Instead, my own darling little tot still wakes up at 3am screaming for a bottle. By the time I get him back to sleep, I usually return to my bed to find a 3 year old sleeping sideways. He’s often joined by at least 2 more of my baby bears that have tested all the beds in the house and decided Mamas is “just right.” Its a King size bed filled with love. But not a lot of quality sleep.

If you’re a new mom, I guarantee you’ve purchased at least one (or five) books on sleep. The only problem is you’re so sleep deprived you can’t seem to get past the first page. Despite my current situation, I have found a few things that worked for me when it comes to getting more sleep as a new parent.

I have mixed emotions about this one. Yes we all know we should sleep when the baby sleeps. But there are certain things we need to get done and this is our only opportunity. My advice? Sleep when your baby sleeps as much as you can. It really is important. Accept your house is a bit messy and give yourself a break. I spent way too much time trying to keep the perfect home. At the end of the day, you will never get these moments back. Sleep so that when your baby is awake you will be ready to play!

This was the most challenging for me. I felt guilty if someone else watched my baby while I took a nap. But sleep is not a luxury, its a medical requirement. Friends and family love nothing more than holding a sweet newborn baby. Trust me, you can take a 2 hour nap and still be a great mom!

You and your spouse take turns getting up with the baby. This works very well for women who are not breastfeeding. Pumping can help for those who do breastfeed and don’t mind their baby drinking from a bottle. Even if your husband will only do it one or two days a week, it can be fantastic. You will be amazed at how you feel after 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep!

While heating up a baby bottle, or getting ready to nurse, have a power snack. Crackers, peanut butter or a glass of milk can give you the boost you need without keeping you up after a late night feeding. You will feel much better in the morning and have more energy.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember you will sleep again. Babies grow up and the problems you’re trying so hard to solve now, will disappear in time. I promise you won’t need to let your 5th grader “cry it out” or break them of a binky. You will sleep again!! The question is with five kids… will I?

Let us know what worked for you as a new mom when it comes to getting a better nights sleep!
