Comfort from Adjustable Bases

Adding an adjustable base to your mattress for comfort is a wise decision. The obvious benefit of introducing an adjustable frame to your bed is the ability to conform your bed to your preferred body position. This type of added comfort is not solely for sleeping either. You can use this for relaxing in bed while reading or watching TV. You can also use massage features to help relieve stress and get more comfortable before sleeping.

Health Benefits from Adjustable Bases

The functionality of an adjustable bed goes far beyond just the comfort factors, there are many health benefits offered in addition. Using an adjustable to raise your upper torso can help with acid reflux, sleep apnea, and snoring. Additionally, people who suffer from arthritis, joint pain, back pain, and limited mobility can find it easier to sleep and get into and out of bed by using an adjustable power base.

Other general health benefits include improved blood circulation, easier breathing, added pressure relief, and assisted digestion depending on when you eat. People who suffer from insomnia have also found it easier to sleep on their mattress when it’s paired with an adjustable bed base. A 2022 study by Oxford University found that sleep improved in duration and quality when using the adjustable base compared to original bed bases.

Health Benefits for Pregnant People

One particular group of people who’d benefit greatly from the use of an adjustable base is pregnant people according to the article, ‘10 Health Benefits of Using An Adjustable Bed Frame‘ from Retirement Living. The discomfort associated with a pregnant body is amplified when trying to find a comfortable sleeping position. The ability to manipulate the bed to conform to your body is very beneficial for pregnant bodies.

A pregnant body can be difficult to move around, this is doubly true when trying to get into and out of bed. Having the backup of a power bed to aid in this type of movement is invaluable. Add to that the fact that it is much more likely for pregnant people to sleep comfortably with the custom body positioning and using an adjustable frame is an easy choice.

Adjustable Base Disadvantages

While an adjustable base does have many pros to its use, there are a few cons that should be considered as well. These factors are universal for all adjustable bases, so you should know them upfront before buying.

  • Higher cost – Any adjustable frame is going to cost more than a regular foundation or box spring.
  • Weight – Adjustable frames are fairly heavy and can be difficult to move around without help.
  • Noise – Because hydraulic and electric motors are used to function adjustable bases, there is often a noise associated which can be bothersome.
  • Sheets – Sometimes, when operating adjustable power beds, the sheets can come off the mattress. This can force you to get new sheets to address the issue.
  • Restricted movement – When an adjustable operates, your body is moved into positions that can make it difficult to shift positions.
  • Standard sizes – If you want an adjustable for non-traditional mattress sizes like the Wyoming King, or an Olympic Queen, you cannot easily find an adjustable base.

The Difference Between Divided & Split King

King size adjustable bases come in two different configurations, split king, and divided king. An example of each configuration is shown below for visual reference. The reason for these two types of bases is how they’re meant to be used. A split king comes with two sides, left and right, and can be used to function independently with two different Twin XL mattresses so that each side caters to the individual. A divided king comes with a top and bottom and is meant to function for the entire king size mattress.

Adjustable Base Frequently Asked Questions

Do adjustable bases work in bed frames?

Yes, sometimes. So long as the legs of the adjustable base are not impeded by the outer frame and it can function freely. Most modern bed sets allow for the inclusion of adjustable bases. To be absolutely sure, you should speak with a bedding expert.

Can you use any mattress on top of an adjustable base?

Almost. Approximately 99% of all modern mattresses can be paired with an adjustable base with no limitations. The small 1% of mattresses that cannot are the older style ones that have a Bonnell coil style support system. This means all the coils are tied and will be permanently contorted if used with an adjustable base. If you’re unsure if your mattress will work, you can ask a mattress expert here at Gardner White!

Does using an adjustable base wear out the mattress faster?

No. Because all new mattresses are designed to be used for at least ten years, extra movement when paired with an adjustable bed will not adversely affect the mattress. They’re designed to withstand your weight for many years so they’re already very durable.

Are adjustable bases worth the money?

Yes! Because an adjustable base can last up to 20 years, and the various health and comfort benefits that they offer, they are most certainly worth the money.

Can you put a coil mattress on an adjustable base?

Yes. Most current innerspring models can be paired with an adjustable base. The fair majority of innerspring mattresses feature individually-pocketed coils which means that they can float more freely and accommodate the movement of an adjustable bed frame.

Do I need to use a box spring with an adjustable base?

No. The top surface serves as a foundation for the mattress. It’s similar to what a box spring does so having them together is unnecessary. Plus, the adjustable base would not function properly with a box spring because it moves and the box spring does not.
