How to Choose the Perfect Mattress

Screen shot 2014-06-26 at 2.17.51 PM

On average, we spend over 29 years of our lives sleeping. That means having a comfortable, supportive mattress is really important. If you think it’s time for a new mattress, here are a few things to consider:

· How old is your current mattress? If your mattress is over 7 years old and you are waking up with body aches or stiffness, it may have lost its ability to properly support you. Also, if you notice visible dips or lumps or if the interior is exposed, it’s time for a new mattress.

· What comfort level is best? There are four main types of mattresses: firm, plush, pillow top or ultra plush. A firm mattress is often recommended for people with back pain as they tend to be more supportive, while the ultra plush mattress style is super soft and are sometimes referred to as “clouds.” The best way to discover which comfort level is right for you is to test mattresses out at our Gardner-White locations with advice from one of our mattress experts.

· What temperature are you when you’re sleeping? The construction of the mattress can also determine your comfort level. For example, if you tend to overheat while sleeping, a mattress constructed of memory foam may not be the most comfortable for you as foams tend to trap heat. To find out if a memory foam, innerspring, latex or hybrid mattress is right for you, visit a Gardner-White store to speak with a mattress expert.

· Do you need a better foundation? The right foundation can also make a big difference in the comfort level as well as help to increase the life-span of your mattress. A flat foundation is good for those who don’t want to be disturbed by other sleeping partners, as a yielding foundation acts as a shock absorber for the mattress. Adjustable bases are great for those who have a hard time getting in and out of bed, or like to watch TV in their bedroom.

How to Make a Small Bedroom Feel Larger

Screen shot 2014-06-19 at 11.51.04 AM

Your bedroom should be an oasis where you can kick back and relax, but it’s hard to get comfortable when your bedroom is small and cramped. Make your little bedroom look and feel larger with our four simple tricks:

1. Pick ultra-functional furniture. Maximize your space by adding furniture with hidden storage, like beds and settees. The Caldwell Bed features six pull out drawers in both the footboard and the sideboards, making this piece the ultimate space utilizer.

2. Keep it light. Decorating with dark colors can make your room feel like a cave. Choose light colored furniture, bedding and drapes and also paint your walls and ceiling a light color. The Bostwick Collection and the Rometta Collection are great sets to help you achieve a lighter look.

3. Utilize mirrors. Mirrors reflect light throughout the space, making your bedroom feel larger. Gardner-White has a selection of mirrors in different sizes and shapes. Shop for a great mirror here.

4. Buy a plasma chest. Instead of packing your small bedroom with a lot of bulky furniture, buy a plasma chest that will double as a dresser and TV storage. This will allow you to hide unsightly cords and unclutter the area. The Serena Plasma Chest would be a beautiful, space saving addition to your bedroom.

5 Ways to Maximize Storage Space

In a perfect world, there is “a place for everything and everything in its place.” However, for most of us, there simply isn’t enough room to store everything in our homes. Gardner-White wants to help you get your clutter under control! Here are our 5 tips on how to maximize storage space in your living room, bedroom and beyond:

1. Sectionals with built in storage. One of the hot new trends in 2014 furniture is storage sectionals. Many sectionals now come with hidden storage, either in the headrest area, or inside a center console between seats. The Ginger Collection is a great example of how a sectional can combine comfort and relaxation with functionality. Shop our sectionals here.

2. Storage ottomans. If you don’t have enough room for a large sectional, try incorporating a storage ottoman into your living room instead. Storage ottomans can add a different texture or a pop of color while storing blankets, throw pillows and TV remotes. Your living room will be uncluttered in no time! Shop our storage ottomans here.

3. Entertainment centers. Small TV stands just don’t cut it sometimes. An entertainment center can be the answer to large DVD collections, video game consoles, electronic equipment, books and more. Start organizing! Shop our entertainment centers here.

4. Sofa tables with drawers. A sofa table with two little drawers doesn’t seem like it would make a big impact on organization, but they can be extremely useful. Place a sofa table near your front door to hold small items, like car keys, wallets, sunglasses and more. Shop our sofa tables here.

5. Beds with hidden storage. The living room isn’t the only place that needs organization. Beds with hidden storage are becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason. When closets start to overflow, suddenly shoes and clothes no longer have a place. Kids’ rooms are also notorious for clutter; hidden storage can be the perfect place to hide away toys and clothes! Shop our storage beds here.

Has your furniture helped you unclutter your home? We’d love to hear about it! Leave us a comment here, or post a comment to our Facebook page.

Top 5 Ways to Inject Color into Your Space

The easiest way to freshen up your home is to add a little color. Adding an accent color can be as big as switching out your old sofa for a brightly colored one, or as small as adding a few throw pillows to your existing furniture. Here are our 5 tips on how to inject color into your space:

1. Add an accent chair or accent ottoman. Accent chairs and accent ottomans can come in a variety of colors and patterns. Choose a pattern with a similar color palette as your other furniture to tie the room together. Find an accent ottoman with storage, like our Tate Storage Ottoman by Jonathan Louis, for bonus functionality. Shop our accent chairs here. Shop our accent ottomans here.

2. Define your space with a colorful rug. Rugs not only define a space within an open area, like a living room or a dining area, but they can also add a splash of color. Choose a rug with an interesting pattern or a long shag to add some texture to your space. Shop our area rugs here.

3. Toss on some patterned throw pillows. One of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to add color to your room is to add throw pillows to an existing sofa, loveseat or chair. Throw pillows comes in all different colors, patterns and textures. Shop our colorful pillows here.

4. Custom order a colorful sofa. At Gardner-White, we have a large selection of custom order furniture that comes in a variety of colors and patterns. Our Aquarium Collection, Kris Collection, Hourglass Collection, Rainstorm Collection, Tate Collection, Carlin Collection and Gypsy Collection are all completely customizable. The best part is, you can customize these featured furniture collections for free!

5. Brighten up a room with a colorful lamp. Those who don’t want to take the plunge and purchase a large, brightly colored piece of furniture can add color in subtle ways. Accessories, like lamps, can add a small accent here and there. Shop our lamps here.

Adding a splash of color to freshen up your living space has never been easier! Have you accented your home with color? Upload your photos to our Facebook page or leave a comment below telling us how you did it.
