Gardner-White and Humble Design Transform Home for Family

Friday, May 12th was a great day to be part of the Gardner-White team – we participated in another day of service in partnership with Humble Design, and saw a family’s future transformed. That’s a pretty good day on the job.

More about this touching story is available below:

There wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd when the family arrived to their new home.

Humble Design works with families coming out of homeless shelters, and helps them to make their house into a home. Most of these families come with virtually nothing, and certainly aren’t toting around a mattress to sleep on, or a table at which to do homework or share a meal. This is where Gardner-White has stepped in and provided furnishings to help these families transition out of homelessness and into a successful fresh start. On Friday, the Gardner-White team took our commitment one step further and transformed the house ourselves, not only with furniture, but also with some major elbow grease.

Images of this transformation are available here:

We originally started our work with Humble Design 3 years ago, when we learned that the organization’s greatest need was mattresses – Humble Design had the capacity to do more home renovations each week, but did not have enough mattresses for the families as they emerged from the shelter. Gardner-White and its bedding partners have stepped in to fill this void. This May, Tempur-pedic donated enough twin mattresses to supply Humble Design for nearly a month, meaning that all some very lucky children will be sleeping on some pretty spectacular mattresses.

Gardner-White loves partnering with Humble Design and will definitely be keeping at it. Families get involved with Humble Design at a moment when furniture can really make a major impact in their lives, and we at Gardner-White are proud to play a role in that. Also, Humble Design has proven to be REALLY effective – while up to 50% of families go back into homelessness within 12 months, the families who work with Humble go back into homelessness less than 1% of the time. With a track record like that, we’ll continue to partner with Humble Design and hopefully, to help the organization keep growing their scale and impact over time.
