Blood Drive Near You on Thursday, April 7th

There is a significant need for blood & platelet donors right now. Patients are depending on us. Just one pint of blood can save up to three lives. The need is constant. The gratification is instant. Give blood.™

Gardner-White is sponsoring a blood drive near you on Thursday, April 7, 2016:

As a token of our appreciation, all participants will receive a certificate for $50 off their next purchase at any Gardner-White. Plus, each store will have a drawing in which one participant will receive a $500 Gardner-White gift certificate.

How do I know if I am eligible to donate at the blood drive?

You must be in good health, be at least 17 years old, and weigh at least 110 pounds. You will also need to pass physical and health history reviews prior to donating. There is no upper age limit on your ability to donate. Conditions that require a temporary deferral are pregnancy, travel to certain parts of the world, inoculations, some health conditions and certain medications.

Call 1-800-REDCROSS or visit www.redcrossblood.org to get answers to specific eligibility questions you may have. Final eligibility is determined by medical professionals at the time of donation.

Can I schedule an appointment?

The American Red Cross has convenient appointment scheduling online. Just click this link and choose the Gardner-White location & time that is best for you. MIU Men’s Health Foundation

MIU Men’s Health Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting men’s health advocacy and the awareness, education, research and treatment of prostate cancer and men’s health related issues. Within the past year, MIU Men’s Health Foundation has provided grants to numerous organizations including Friends Together based in Alpena, Michigan, the Karmanos Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society (ACS). The Foundation also continued their Prostate Cancer Survivorship Series: monthly events for prostate cancer survivors to share stories and moments of survivorship.
As we prepare for 2016, we have new exciting programs planned while continuing our numerous existing programs and events. We are excited to launch The Blue Fund, which will financially support Prostate Cancer patients going through active treatment.

CARE House of Oakland County

CARE House of Oakland County is a non-profit child advocacy center [CAC] that serves the 1.2 million residents of Oakland County, providing critical services to physically and sexually abused children. All of our services are offered at no cost to our clients. Open since 1977, 5000 children and non-offending family members come through CARE House each year to make use of our comprehensive services. CARE House receives cases of suspected child abuse from law enforcement officials and children’s protective service workers. The child comes to our facility for a forensic interview which is conducted by a highly-trained staff person and witnessed by the investigative team. The child is able to disclose if abuse occurred in a calm, stress-free environment while avoiding the potentially traumatic experience of undergoing a police interrogation. CARE House also provides therapy services for these children and their non-offending guardians for as long as they need them.

Additionally, CARE House operates several programs related to the prevention of child abuse, including an Early Head Start program which provides education and support to at-risk families; a Court Appointed Special Advocates program to benefit children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect; and our training programs which educate adults to better recognize the signs of abuse and neglect in the children they encounter in their daily lives. Our vision is that CARE House will impact the safety of every child in Oakland County through prevention, intervention and treatment.

Top 5 Moving Lessons from Kim Adams

ONE MOM AND A TRUCK

Moving… as a former military mom, I’m no stranger to moving. 14 times in 12 years. I thought I had it all down to a science. So this past December I decided moving 5 days before Christmas would be perfectly fine. Boy was I wrong. One mom, 5 kids, a cat and a hundred mistakes later, we are finally moved into the new digs. I learned a lot this time. Let me narrow it down to the Top 5 lessons.

Moving Truck with Boxes

1. ORGANIZE, DONATE AND THROW AWAY BEFORE YOU MOVE

Most moving companies charge by weight and/or by the hour. Why pay to move things you don’t need or want in the new home? You will save on moving boxes and the headache of having to pack unwanted items. This includes furniture. I decided to upgrade my kids’ beds to better quality “big boy” bedroom sets from Gardner-White. Instead of moving the old beds, I decided to donate them and take the tax deduction. Their new beds were delivered to our new home. Plus, the beds were all assembled and ready to be slept in the very same day! Truly this was the easiest part of my move!

2. MEASURE FURNITURE BEFORE YOU PAY TO MOVE IT

That huge sofa in the old house might not fit in the new house. Or perhaps you’ve been thinking about upgrading from a queen to a king? NOW is the time to decide if your furniture works in the new home. Because as I said before, it makes no sense to move furniture only to sell or donate it later. Check out the handy “Will It Fit” guide on the Gardner-White website here: http://www.gardner-white.com/customer-service/will-it-fit

TV Cords

3. TAKE PICTURES OF YOUR CORDS

This sounds funny, but trust me it will save you so many headaches. Take a quick picture of the back of your TV of all the cables BEFORE the movers unplug everything. I can’t tell you how much time and effort it took figuring out cable cords, PS4, Xbox and Wii connections! A photo of where things were when everything worked would have been very helpful.

4. MAKE A MOVING SUPPLY BOX

If I had to search for a Sharpie or the tape roll one more time I thought my head would come off. A little plastic bin with all the items in one spot would have saved me time and headaches when I was packing. It sounds simple but packing takes hours and hours no matter how organized you think you are. It never failed I would pack a room only to open a cabinet or closet filled with more stuff!

5. PACK AN OVERNIGHT BOX

Moving day is stressful. No matter how you try and prevent it, you will be an exhausted mess by the end of the day. Even with a good moving company there are still things you have to do yourself. Make sure you have a box with toiletries, sheets, a pillow, change of clothes etc. In fact, I pack an overnight bag for each member of the family. Its much less stressful than searching through 15 boxes to find your toothbrush!

Gardner-White Donates To Fire Stations

Gardner-White is proud to have been able to donate furniture to 3 fire stations in Detroit and 1 in Taylor, MI on Thursday, March 10, 2016.  The 14 queen and twin beds along with an additional 14 recliners will help the firefighters rest comfortably between emergency runs.  It was great to be with the Detroit Fire Department leadership at Engine 32 so we could see how our donation is able to make a difference!  Thank you to all metro area fire departments for what you do to keep our community safe!

Pic1_Engine32_Detroit_Gardner-White_Donation

The new beds will be distributed among the city’s three fire stations to replace bedding that, in some cases, has been used for more than 20 years.

As a family business, we have tremendous appreciation for the great work and services our local fire departments provide to families in our communities.  We are proud to support our firefighters by providing them with comfortable beds and recliner chairs to make the firehouses a welcoming home away from home and ensure they are well-rested to tackle whatever challenges their shifts may bring.
