Charituesday: Detroit Firemen’s Fund & Detroit Police Athletic League

CharituesdayPhoto3-31-15

This week’s Charituesday benefits not only one deserving charitable organization, but two! Both the Detroit Firemen’s Fund Association AND Detroit Police Athletic League will be receiving $500 Gardner-White gift certificates to use for community members in need. Here’s the best part; the organization with the most votes on our Gardner-White Facebook poll will DOUBLE their prize to $1,000!

About the Detroit Firemen’s Fund Association

The Detroit Firemen’s Benevolent Fund has served firefighters and our community for over 149 years. Their membership is made up of active duty and retired Detroit Firefighters. They were originally organized in 1866 to aid injured Detroit firefighters, widows and children of deceased firemen. Throughout the years they have expanded their scope to include our community and our region.

The Firemen’s Fund helps to strengthen those ties through hosting various community events. They also award college scholarships to help promote higher education. In addition, the Fund helps to organize firefighter volunteers for community projects such as block clean-ups and board ups of abandoned buildings.

Learn more about the Detroit Firemen’s Fund Association here.

About the Detroit Police Athletic League

Detroit PAL is a non-profit organization positively impacting the lives of more than 11,000 children each year. With roots dating back to 1969, their group works to create safe and supportive places for kids to play.  We also train and certify more than 1,500 volunteers each year to become encouraging coaches and mentors to the city’s youth.

In partnership with the Detroit Police Department and community volunteers, Detroit PAL builds character in young people through athletic, academic and leadership development programs.

They strive to achieve three important goals for their kids:

  • Young people with high character
  • Young people who lead active and healthy lifestyles
  • Young people who give back in their community

Ashley’s favorite thing at Gardner-White is the Raven Bedroom Set, which she purchased for herself.

“The Raven has a nice color balance; it is unique looking, and durable. The curved legs are something that I have yet to see on another bedroom set,” said Ashley.

Ashley is an Eastern Michigan University alumna and is currently attending Madonna University where she is studying American Sign Language.

“ASL is a wonderful language, and I am extremely excited to be fluent one day,” said Ashley.
