GW’s Guide to a Better Night’s Sleep

BR15_RE_MF+_Lifestyle_01

Feeling drained even after sleeping for 7-8 hours? Your bedroom might be preventing you from a restful night’s sleep. Having healthy sleep habits can make the difference between tossing and turning all night and sleeping like a log. Here are 6 tips to getting better shut-eye:

  1. Get comfy. Did you know that most mattresses and pillows are to blame for restless sleep? Replace your old mattress with a plush, comfortable iComfort, Serta, Restonic, Beautyrest, Aireloom or Tempur-Pedic. Gardner White is your specialty mattress headquarters; shop for mattresses here, and start sleeping restfully tonight.
  2. Reduce light & sound. Light can also keep you up at night. Hanging heavy curtains to black out light from windows and making sure lamps and lights are turned off before turning in can help. Also, if your bedroom is noisy, consider investing in earplugs or a “white noise” generator to help block out sounds.
  3. Power down the electronics. Speaking of light and sound, electronics, like smartphones and TV, emit an unnatural light that can be overstimulating. Shut off electronics at least an hour before bed.
  4. Set a soothing bedtime ritual. An hour before you go to sleep, relax with a low-key activity like reading a book or taking a bath. This will help reduce the production of Cortisol, a hormone that contributes to alertness.
  5. Stick to your sleep schedule, even on the weekends. If you go to bed at 10 pm during the week, try to sleep at the same time on the weekends. If you go to bed later and wake up later on a Saturday or Sunday, plan on being pretty tired on Monday.
  6. Limit daytime naps. It seems counterintuitive to think that naps could negatively impact your rest, but napping during the day can cause you to stray from your sleep schedule. Limit your daytime naps to one or two short, 20-minute rests during the day. Oh, and don’t nap after 5 pm.
Follow these tips, and you should be feeling more energized in no time. Sweet dreams!

If you’re like us, you love to “do it yourself,” also known as DIY. And when it comes to your décor, sometimes the handmade element can add an extra touch of home to your living space. Here are some of our favorite DIY accessories that are easy, stylish and affordable:

1. Pallet Shelves. As you can see in the photo above, one man’s trash can be another man’s treasure! Often times, retailers or grocery stores have tons of pallets on hand that can be reused to create some rustic wall décor. With some wood stain and a little bit of elbow grease, you can transform a pallet into a place to showcase your trinkets. We’d pair this DIY project with the Crosby Collection.

2. Curtain Canopy Bed. Always wanted a canopy bed, but didn’t have the room or the money to get one? Now, with some curtain rods and long curtains, you can create the illusion of a canopy bed without the cost of buying a whole new bedroom set. The flowing curtains add a touch of airy coziness. We’d pair this DIY project with the Walton Collection.

3. Upcycled Window Cocktail Table. We are obsessed with upcycling! Not only is it good for the environment, but it’s great for your home too. This project is a little more advanced, but we promise it will all be worth it. We’d pair this DIY project with the Claire Collection.

Bookcase

4. Burlap Backed Bookshelves. If the last DIY project was too advanced for you, this one will be right up your alley. Burlap adds texture to otherwise bland objects. Easily line the back of a bookshelf or photo frame to add a special touch. All you need is a couple yards of burlap, or another favorite fabric, some small tacks and a tack hammer. We’d pair this DIY project with the Delta Collection.

5. Beautifully disguised TV. If you have a flat screen hanging on the wall, you know it can sometimes stick out like a sore thumb. Say goodbye to your boring flat screen and say hello to DIY chic! Frame your TV with moulding (sleek for a contemporary look and ornate for a more traditional look) and make your tube look like a work of art. We’d pair this DIY with the Hancock Collection.

Have you created an unique accessories for your home by “doing it yourself”? If so, we would love to see! Post a photo on your favorite social channel and use the hashtag #GWDIYCorner or leave a comment with a link to your photo below.

About CARE House

CARE House is a safe place where a child’s voice is heard.  It’s a place where the darkness of abuse is brought into the light, where children are guilded along the path of healing.

Whether it’s at CARE House, inside the home of a vulnerable family, in a courtroom, at a school or another of its many community partners, CARE House provides a continuum of quality care for children and families:

  • From primary prevention, through educating groups of adults on our shared responsibility for child sexual abuse;
  • To advocacy, by being the voice for a child who’s the ward of the court due to abuse or neglect;
  • To teaching vulnerable families to be more nurturing, non-violent and empathetic;
  • To protecting children by intervening in cases of suspected abuse;
  • To providing healing therapeutic services for victims of abuse, through individual therapy and support groups;
  • To teaching young mothers the fundamentals of good parenting and the importance of giving their children a healthy start.

Over 5,000 individuals are served each year by these CARE House programs, all of which are provided at no cost to the children and families in need of these critical services.
