Gardner-White is surviving and thriving
By Greta Guest
Detroit Free Press Business Writer

Gardner-White has survived much in its 100 years in the furniture business from the Great Depression to auto company slumps that crushed its local sales.
And now it’s embarking on a hiring blitz to staff its new Auburn Hills headquarters, warehouse, retail store and outlet store with 200 new workers.
Gardner-White is to host a job fair next Thursday and Friday for on-the-spot interviews for warehouse, retail and other positions.
The first Gardner-White store opened in 1912 on Mack Avenue near Mt. Elliott in Detroit. The company was purchased in the late 1950s by Irwin Kahn. His daughter, Barb Tronstein, serves as vice president and her husband, Steve Tracey, serves as president.
And while the company is in expansion mode now, it wasn’t that long ago that the housing crisis and dark days for the auto companies were forcing some companies to significantly shrink or close.
“Our company goal in 2008 and early 2009 was to be in the 2010 phone book,” Tracey said. “If GM or Chrysler had gone out of business, I don’t think there would be any retailers standing in this market.”
So in 2009, Gardner-White embarked on a partnership with electronics giant Best Buy to sell high-definition televisions and other electronics along with its living room and bedroom furniture.
“We were looking for something to carry us through the difficult times that were going to be ahead,” Tracey said. “We felt this was a tremendous opportunity for customers who get televisions at the time of the HD conversion with their furniture. It was a remarkably successful marketing and merchandising strategy. We were very lucky.”
Smaller and quieter than its main competitor, Warren-based Art Van Furniture, Gardner-White has seven Michigan locations and will have eight with the new 90,000-square-foot Auburn Hills location.
Its other locations are in Waterford, Southfield, Warren, Canton, Taylor and Macomb Township. The company employs 400 workers.
The company also plans to thank its customers and the metro Detroit community for supporting its employees and operations over the years with charitable giving and by hosting appreciation events throughout the year.
For example, the company’s ongoing anniversary sale that ends May 23 will donate a portion of all store sales to build houses for homeless veterans in a program with Volunteers of America. The company plans to make its new headquarters in Auburn Hills after operating in Warren for many years. The Auburn Hills complex will span 455,000 square feet with an opening planned for July or August.
“I think it is important to say how grateful we are to our employees and customers. A company is only as good as its people,” Tronstein said. “Our employees and customers are our two biggest assets — the only things that count.”
